From the third century BC to the third century ad, Nisa was one of the first capitals of the Parthian Empire, one of the largest state entities of the ancient world. In the city were concentrated Palace and temple buildings, there was a Treasury, a huge storage of wine and warehouses with provisions. Since the XVI century, the Nisa steadily declined and already in the 20s of the XIX century was a ruin. Then we will move to Ertugrul Gazi mosque. Ertugrulgazi mosque, a beautiful religious building of Ashgabat, built in the Turkish style. The second name of the mosque is Azadi. It has 4 minarets, accommodates up to 5 thousand believers and is the largest in the capital of Turkmenistan. The mosque was built in 1993-1998, and received its name in honor of the Ottoman Sultan Ertogrul, who ruled in the XIII century one of the Turkic territorial formations in Asia Minor. Ertogrulgazy mosque is a spectacular combination of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, with an extraordinary similarity to the famous Blue mosque in Istanbul. One of the more unexpected but undoubted highlights of our tour to Turkmenistan was the visit to the Akhal-Teke Stud Farm, run by the jovial Mr. Gulmedov, near Geok Depe. You will spend a truly fabulous afternoon here in the warm spring sun, admiring the handsome, majestic horses and learning about the fascinating history of this rare breed. Today the Akhal-Teke is quite rare by modern breed standards, with less than 3000 existing worldwide. The breed is very dear to Turkmenistan and is ingrained in Turkmen culture and folklore. The last Sunday of every April is national “Day of the Turkmen Racehorse” where competitions and races are held as well as a contest in Ashgabat to find the most beautiful Akhal-Teke horse.
