The architecture of Khiva captures the imagination with its monumental forms and graceful ornaments. Its buildings are notable examples of high artistic mastery and the bold engineering solutions from local masters and architects Khorezm.
One of the highlights of Khiva are:
• Kunya Ark - the ruler of Khiva own fortress and residence for the first time in 12 Built century, then by the Khan in the 17th Century expanded. The Khans, harem, mint, stables, arsenal, barracks, mosque and prison were all here. Only parts have been restored.
• Juma mosque. The Great Mosque Juma is interesting for the 218 wooden pillars supporting its roof - a concept thought to be derived from the old Arabic mosques. The few finely decorated columns are from the original 10 Century mosque, although the present building dates from the 18th Century. ]
• Tash Hauli (stone house), Khiva contains the most magnificent interiors, including tile, stone and wood carved, and Ghanch. It is said to have over 150 yards of nine rooms designed with high ceilings to catch any breeze.
• Islam & Madrasa Khodja minaret. The minaret of Islam Khodja is considered the latest Islamic monument, was built in 1910. The minaret with bands of turquoise and red tile looks more like an uncommonly beautiful lighthouse. At 45m high, it is the highest Khiva. You can climb its 118 steps for a beautiful view of the Karakum desert.
• Pakhlavan Makhmud complex (XIV - XIX c) - the remarkable memorial architecture in Khiva with unique tiles.
