2 - Modern History of Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan takes the heart of the Central Asian region historically known as Turkestan. Some of the earliest known inhabitants of this region were Indo-Iranians, who are probably moved into the region around the second millennium BC up to the 4th Century BC, increased after the campaigns of Alexander the Great, trade along the Silk Road, and the area proved to be a major trading center, intensified cultural contact, and flourished a variety of religions.
After the Arab campaigns of the 7th and 8 Century, Islam replaced Buddhism as the dominant religion, and until the 10 Century, the area had become an important center in the Muslim world. The Mongols, led by Genghis Khan, was in the 13th Century and caused great destruction. During this time, increased migrations of nomadic Turks from the northern steppes. In the late 14th Century chieftain Timur (Tamerlane) has created a vast empire with Samarkand as its capital, but the political stability he founded after his death fell apart. Shaibani Khan in the early 1500s, led a large invasion by Uzbek tribes from the north. From this point on, Uzbeks dominated the political life of central Turkestan. Three independent khanates, centered in Bukhara, Khiva and Kokand dominated Turkestan between the 16th and 19 Century. But in the second half of the 19th Century, the Russian armed forces had the khanates, which were annexed or subjugated in protectorates. Tashkent became the administrative center of Turkestan, and founded a colonial relationship. Cotton began to displace other crops.
Dissatisfaction with the Russian government is manifested in anticzarist revolts, often run by religious leaders, while a group of urban intellectual reformers, known as Jadid, sought to improve the lives of local people by secular education. In the years before the Bolshevik Revolution, the economic and political situation deteriorated dramatically, and in the summer of 1916, shook major disruptions in the region.
After the Bolshevik seizure of power, the new leader promised an end to the colonial treatment of Russian Turkestan, but they showed no willingness to allow for meaningful political participation of the local population. Consequently, in November 1917 an extraordinary congress convened local leaders in the city of Kokand, where they proclaimed the autonomy of the south-central Asia. But in February 1918 Bolshevik troops from Tashkent sent the young Kokand government brutally crushed. Over the next few years a guerrilla movement Basmachi opposition fighters fought against the Bolsheviks, but was ultimately defeated. Meanwhile, the traditional rulers of Bukhara and Khiva were removed and new states under strong Bolshevik influence were founded there.
